The construction of your house is dependent on geometric truths. The walls, baseboards, floorboards, carpet, windows, roof, all of it. Your task, due by Monday September 10th, is to identify a unique (in your mind) or interesting geometric feature about your house, interior or exterior, photograph it if possible, post the photo here, and describe in detail the geometry you see.
Here's my entry:
This is a photo of my home under construction. It seems the roof, unlike say a treehouse, has a 'pitch', measuring 60 degrees from the ground my feet are on in the photo, which of course is parallel to the ground. I've wondered in the past, "Why 60 degrees? Why not 80? I guess 20 would be too close to the ground in most spots." I also notice the studs (the 2X4s running vertically next to the window) are all parallel, and all perfectly perpendicular with the floor.
Your turn!

ReplyDeleteThere is a very unique arched-bay-window in my house. The base of the window is parallel with the floor, the frame then, extends upwards like a normal window would, as if to make a rectangle, but instead, as it nears the top, it curves inward forming an arch. Due to this arch, the imitation window panes based at the beginning of the arch form acute angles by sprouting off from the vertex, the vertex being found on the midpoint of the horizontal line at the bottom of the arch. Below this arched part, there are squares created by the imitation panes that are made up of perpendicular lines. Also, the imitation panes run vertically and horizontally, parallel to each other. I think this is interesting within relation to geometry, because it manages to merge circular constructions with rectangular ones. In addition to this, it is one of the most defining elements of architecture in my house.
Perfect, Allie. It looks like sub-posting a photo might not work. If anyone finds a way to do that, it'd be great if you could describe the process for us all. Thanks!
DeleteOn the ceiling at the top of the stairs in my house, there is a very interesting skylight. The cutout on the ceiling itself is a perfect rectangle. It looks like the rectangle cut out goes towards the sky and is framed by a pane of glass. For a visual, it would take the form of the geometrical shape of a trapezoid if placed on a 2D plane. I wonder if the structure and shape of the skylight affects the amount of light that is let into the hallway. I also wonder why it has to be such a complex structure. Why couldn't the builders just cut out a 2D rectangle in the roof and stick a piece of glass on it? The intricate skylight in my house brings up questions related to how it was built, which connects to geometry.

Maybe to gather more sunlight? Nice.
DeleteIn my kitchen we have lots of cabinets. They are all rectangles and and have 90 degree angles on all of the corners.this makes me wander why are cabinets not triangles you can put smaller stuff at the tip and larger stuff at the bass. this would make the dicision of where to put cups and plates easier.
ReplyDeleteHa! I love it! Triangular countertops! Although, you might get stabbed by the corner sticking out.
DeleteIn my house there are many doors, these doors are never the same distance away from the wall. Why couldn't the builders have put the doors flush with the wall? Why are all the doors different distances away from the wall? If all of the doors were equal distances from the wall there could be more space in each room
ReplyDeleteMaybe to avoid the door rubbing against the wall when opening it?
DeleteIn my room there is a weird angle in the wall between the closet and the door. I wonder why the builder didn't build the wall differently so that the angle wasn't there. The builder could have also made it so that the door way was wider and once again not have the angle.
ReplyDeleteUsually those decisions are aesthetic. Create a unique style to the room itself.
DeleteIn my hostfamily's living room some kinds of things are displayed on the wall. We can find a rectangle, ellipse, acute angle, right angle, triangle, plane... Only this space, there are so many geometrical things. I didn't notice before this assignment. Looking from the front and the side, I can find different angles. It's interensting for me and the geometry is connected our life.
ReplyDeleteExcellent, Saya. Thanks
Deletei like your ideas
DeleteIn my hose there are several different angles that are very unique. My house was custom built for the people who lived there previously. Throughout my entire house, there are white columns. In one room, there are two columns and then a wall extends off off the column. It is interesting to me that two columns are basically the reason a room is shaped that way.
ReplyDeleteIn my house I have a wall that curves out ward. When this curve meets the other wall and turns, the angle is about 60 degrees. I am wondering why the builders didn't make it to be a 90 degree angle or even a smaller degree of angle like a 30 degree angle. If it was either bigger of an angle or smaller what would have changed? Would the curve be bigger? Closer to the ceiling or farther away from the ceiling? Would it have made the window below the curve smaller or bigger? Would it impact the opposite walls? These are the questions I ask myself haha.

ReplyDeleteIn certain places in my house the corners visually look like complete triangles. when first looked at the corner it doesn't make a complete triangle, but when concentrated on it comes up as a variety of triangles. some might be isosceles of right angled.this is interesting to me because not all triangles can be just seen according to the total of three sides. but knowing that a triangle can be simply seen through any angle.
In my house we have two large obtuse arches ajacent to eachother in my dining room. They are obtuse and identical. Some may say that the arches open up the room but, in fact they are pointless. Why would the builders not put regular doors ways in? They arches took more work to create than just regular door ways. All around my house there are unique angles but the arches are the most unique/ out of place stuctural things in my house.
ReplyDeleteI have this arch above my parents bedroom. This entryway is different then the rest of the doorways in my house. It seems like it might be structural and possibly load bearing. The arch can help distribute the weight in a certain way that makes it easier for the way to hold. -Hudson Ratzlaff
ReplyDeletein my house no room is actually a square. in one room there are obtuse angles across from a acute angle and no congruent sides and only one 90 degree angle in the entire room . a cross section would look like some strange polygon but no squares in the house. that is why my houses architecture is interesting
ReplyDeleteI have a right triangle space in my house, it's connecting out of the wall above my staircase. as you can hopefully see from the picture. I was wondering if there is wires or tubing in that weird triangle thing above my staircase. If so why isn't it a square so the tubing can go down and then to the right leaving more room for wires or wood, instead of it being diaginal eaving less extra space. It's kind of weird looking I don't see it's purpose. link to picture: file:///C:/Users/luca/Pictures/2012-09-23/DSCN1812.JPG
ReplyDeletei have a knick knack shelf in my living room that has a little above a 90 degree angle. it holds our pictures and trophies but other than that it is a little boring. i wonder why the people who made it made it so that it was slanted instead of straight up and down.its brown.
ReplyDeleteIn my house there is a small wall that the enters and in the top of that wall there is the top of another wall that overlaps on the first wall and makes what looks like a right angle I think it would have been easy to just continue the second wall after the first one but it make a different nice looking design!
ReplyDeleteone of the walls in my house has an slight arch in it as an entryway, which is most likely mainly aesthetic. However the entryway adjacent to it is just a plain entryway. I thought that was really weird, and it made me wonder why they didn't do the arch with both entries when they are on the same wall.
ReplyDeletei have stained glass with many angles all over
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is the seventh time I've typed this. Whatever. The stair case in my house is kind of like this spiral hexagon thing though the middle of my house. From the basement to the top floor. And I was wondering if that structure affected the weight distribution of the house . Like if my staircase suddenly disappeared, would my house collapse?
ReplyDeletein my house there is an area where wood and carpet come together. it is at an obtuse angle, and the carpet has to curve under so you dont trip and fall on your face! its pretty cool!!!
ReplyDeleteIn all the bedrooms in my house they are generally a square with the exception of my room. Behind my door is a rectangular wall that sticks out from the other wall its connected to. While doing this I finally realized why! It turns out it was a support beam. Below my room is the second dinning room; the wall facing the entrance in the dinning room is very unique. In one section there is a half circle wall cut out that leads up to another support beam and above that the beam the wall kinda sinks in making a landing or edge thing which holds a huge decorative plate.
ReplyDeleteIn my backyard there is a pergola. The pergola has quite a drastic pitch. The pitch is about 45 degrees. It has this pitch because without it snow would build up and collapse the structure.
ReplyDeleteIn my apartment there is a large window almost from ceiling to floor, it is a right angle all around but the window is at the farthest end of the window ceil why not in the center
ReplyDeleteIn my home there is a large pyramid like shape going into the roof of my house. It deforms the ceiling. This makes me wonder why it is there and if it does anything to keep the structure of my house intact. (Jacob Malcy)
ReplyDeletein my house we have meany windows and all of them are rectangles most people ahve rectangular windows. why not triangular windows or other shapes to let in diffrent amounts of light

ReplyDeletein my house there is a window in my brothers room that is broken but is still there. the reason this connects to geometry is that when it broke the cracks made geometrical shapes with in the window. that is what i found in the structure of my house that was geometrically interesting.
ReplyDeletein my basement the stairs cut off part of the ceiling. it is about a 90 degree angle and i have never seen this before
ReplyDeletemy basements not finished and the wood planks stick out in several 90 degree angles
ReplyDeleteIn my room the ceiling is a straight ceiling that turns into a point like a triangle and goes into the window. It makes me think if the angle of the roof is exactly 90 degrees or if it is a diffrent angle. Also, if the angle on the roof is the same as the roof on the outside of the house.
ReplyDeleteIn my bed I have Covers that have 4 right angles
ReplyDeleteIn my porch me and my dad made we have 45 angles connected to my house and 180 angle on the floor
in my room i have a little table that is in a triangle form, every angle is 40 degrees/acute angles.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a dangerous table with those three corners. :)
DeleteIn my kitchen, I have a built in bench underneath a window. It has 90 degree angles that meet up with each other and the wall in a really weird way and it looks all complex
ReplyDeleteIn my House I have a right angle stair case that goes through my house

ReplyDeleteIn my house I found a desk that creates a 90 degree angle
ReplyDeleteIn my house i have a chair that makes a right angle
ReplyDeletein my house there is a window. it is a ordinary window. it is a square. there are 4 right angles on the border of the window, and 4 making up the beam that runs down the window.
ReplyDeleteI have this window that is shaped like a rectangle, it has all 90 angles on each corner
